Why The Death Of Australia's Car Company Got Ugly
What Has Become Of The Holden Sellers?
The major issue for the folding of Holden is the reimbursement of Holden's dealers, quite a few of who have spent huge amounts in yard enhancements in recent years in the face of receding sales numbers. While not diving into the whole details of the months of arguing the two sides have had, the General made an offer of remuneration for $1500 a car, while Holden's dealers needed $6110. Despite dealers repeated private and public urges for mediation as well as for more settlement GM never moved on their initial amount.
And this meant over one hundred and twenty of the remaining 184 Holden dealers had to take up the $1500 offer this week after GM setting a June 30 deadline.
Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) CEO James Voortman was adamant with the assessment of how the talks with both parties were conducted, placing blame at GM’s feet.
Yet, this doesn’t mean that this battle has ended. AHDC (Australian Holden Dealer Council) reports the remaining 60 or so Holden dealers will chase GM for increased payments.
Neither General Motors nor Holden given any public statement about this current settlement.
Who Will Repair The Colorado?
And as quite a few dealers having already have removed the Holden Holden branding and reverted over to different brands, this has made much angst as well as a lack of clarity for existing Holden owners.GM indicated earlier in the year they wanted to sign 5 year agreements with Holden dealers with the possibility to take these to a decade, to give current Holden owners have peace-of-mind. While the exact details of these understandings were lost with all the drama over remuneration, it’s assumed that the other Holden dealers accepted the offer from GM have been able to include service agreements included in settlements.
What About HSV?
High performance company, Holden Special Vehicles is set to morph into GMSV (GM Specialty Vehicles). The February announcement of the Holden closure, GM presented plans to sell selected autos as GM Speciality Vehicles. While they has been silent on these ideas since, it is believed that GM will team with Holden Special Vehicles, and will expand the current range of right-hand steer changed General Motor's autos.
However, a possible pitfall that has been raised which might just be a catch for this plan and the AHDC has released a report in the month of June that examines the legitimacy of GMSV. Â
Voortman stated that is “very concerned†thinking about the possibilities that General Motors may eliminate Holden’s network and come back in the marketplace under another name.
